Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Cross Anchor, SC.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Cross Anchor that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
