Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Duncan, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Duncan which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
