Mental health treatment is an important part of the treatment of addiction disorders, because a considerably large number of individuals with substance abuse issues also suffer with a co-occurring mental health disorder. The need for dual diagnosis treatment has become increasingly apparent over the last several years, and many treatment centers in Elko now offer dual diagnosis treatment as part of a wider range of services in addition to conventional and more progressive rehabilitation methods.
In many instances, mental health treatment involves the initial diagnosis of the person's disorder, particularly when addiction is present. Often, the client doesn't initially even know they have an anxiety disorder or are struggling with depression until it is diagnosed in a mental health physician's office or treatment facility. Once diagnosed, corrective steps can be put forth to help the individual become mentally stable, and this may include the use of various psychotherapies, counseling, and possibly medication administration or cessation of medication. In many cases however, clients suffering with a dual diagnosis are self-medicating with substance use or possibly abusing or misusing their medications. In these cases, treatment staff and medical practitioners can determine medication records and suggest actions which can be taken to do away with the need for medication. Individuals can be harmlessly weaned off of medications which are doing more harm than good, or those which they are inclined to abuse.
