Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Fork, SC.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Fork which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
