Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Great Falls, SC.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Great Falls that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
