Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Jamestown, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Jamestown which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
