Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Ladson, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Ladson that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
