The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and obtain referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.

By way of TRICARE, members of the military can obtain drug and alcohol treatment services in Patrick. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other treatment services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detox are restricted to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers will be permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly accepted. Additionally, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other primary rehabilitation services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
