Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Ravenel, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Ravenel which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
