Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sellers, SC.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sellers that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
