The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and get referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.

By way of TRICARE, military members can receive substance abuse treatment services in Startex. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detoxification are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time limits as to how long military members will be permitted to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually allowed. Additionally, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other primary rehabilitation services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
