Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Sunset, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Sunset which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
