Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Townville, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Townville that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
