Mental health treatment is an essential part of the treatment of drug & alcohol abuse disorders, due to the fact that many individuals with substance abuse issues struggle with a co-occurring mental health issue. The need for dual diagnosis rehabilitation has become increasingly evident over the last few years, and many rehab facilities in Java now offer dual diagnosis rehabilitation as part of a broader spectrum of services over and above traditional and more progressive rehabilitation methods.
In many cases, mental health treatment starts with the initial diagnosis of the person's disorder, especially when addiction is present. Oftentimes, the client doesn't initially even know they have an undiagnosed anxiety disorder or are suffering with depression until it is diagnosed in a mental health physician's office or treatment facility. Once diagnosed, treatment steps can be taken to help the person become mentally stable, and this may involve the use of various counseling, therapies, and possibly medication administration or cessation of medication. In many instances however, individuals suffering with a dual diagnosis are attempting to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol or possibly misusing their medications. In these circumstances, treatment staff and mental health specialists can determine medication histories and propose steps which can be introduced to eliminate the need for medication. Individuals can be carefully weaned off of medications which are doing more harm than good, or those which they are inclined to misuse.
