American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Lead face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who reside in secluded regions. Facilities offering addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this distinctive demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which treatment services are available to them through which rehab facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to cover these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
