American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a diversion option to go to rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to cover all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Vivian face is access to comprehensive services, especially those who live in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering support designed to meet the needs of this unique group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language.
