Methadone is a drug used in the treatment of opiate addiction. Someone who wants to stop abusing prescription pain killers or heroin can get enrolled into a methadone clinic in or near Wood where they take it daily to avoid withdrawal, avoid cravings and basically substitute their addiction with a legal medication. Many individuals who begin methadone maintenance stay on it for many years, because coming off it causes withdrawal symptoms much greater than even heroin withdrawal. Methadone is a full opioid agonist, just like heroin. However, it's effects last much longer which is why the withdrawal from it can be so harsh and last for weeks. Additionally, because methadone can remain in the body for such a long time, users usually will not even begin feeling the effects of withdrawal for a day or two when they stop taking it cold turkey. Methadone withdrawal is similar to that of other opiates, and are likened to a severe flu which may include fever, chills, profuse sweating, nausea and vomiting, muscle and bone aches and pain, stomach cramping, extreme insomnia, etc.
Methadone detoxification can be made more comfortable and manageable in a detox facility that accepts patients withdrawing from the drug. Some programs provide a medically managed detox while others help the person detox from the drug cold turkey without any medications.
