Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Antioch, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Antioch which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
