Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Baxter, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Baxter that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
