Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Bon Aqua, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Bon Aqua that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
