Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Charlotte, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Charlotte that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
