Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Cross Plains, TN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Cross Plains that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
