Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Fruitvale, TN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Fruitvale which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
