Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Lancaster, TN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Lancaster that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
