Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Lebanon, TN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Lebanon which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
