Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Morris Chapel, TN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Morris Chapel which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
