Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Ooltewah, TN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Ooltewah which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
