Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Rockwood, TN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Rockwood which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
