Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Sequatchie, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sequatchie which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
