Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Whiteside, TN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Whiteside that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
