One of the out-patient treatment alternatives for clients in Art who are struggling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are authorized to give specific medications to opioid dependent individuals, many of which are opioids also and are addiction. In low amounts however, the individual does not experience high feelings but also doesn't have acute cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug administered for this sole purpose, but there are other options currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to administer the med, which is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The cost of the drug is around $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone that is only be administered in structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is around just under $300 per month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a drug which reverses the effects of opioids. An individual consuming this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and costs about $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned it's an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 monthly.
