The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers insurance benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Athens. This encompasses individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various treatment services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military members are permitted to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually allowed. In additional to this, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which occur on an outpatient basis.
