The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers benefits for retired military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can pick a primary care physician and get referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.

Through TRICARE, members of the military can receive drug and alcohol treatment services in Energy. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various rehabilitation services. They will require pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but inpatient services for detoxification are limited to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are permitted to stay in rehab.
