Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Elmo, UT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Elmo that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
