Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Garden City, UT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Garden City which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
