Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Logan, UT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Logan which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
