Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Mount Carmel, UT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mount Carmel which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
