The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retired military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.
Through TRICARE, military members can acquire drug and alcohol treatment services in Mount Pleasant. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various rehabilitation services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers will be allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically accepted.
