Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Pleasant Grove, UT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Pleasant Grove that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
