Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Riverside, UT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Riverside that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
