Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.
There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Riverton that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
