American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique requirements of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Sigurd face is access to comprehensive rehab programs, particularly those who reside in secluded areas. Facilities providing addiction treatment services in rural regions often are not capable of offering support designed to meet the needs of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which services are available to them and through which facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
