Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Teasdale, UT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Teasdale that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
