Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Whiterocks, UT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Whiterocks that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
