Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Bacova, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Bacova that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
