Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Churchville, VA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Churchville that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
