Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Cleveland, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Cleveland that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
