American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in DHS face is access to comprehensive and effective rehab programs, particularly those who live in secluded areas. Facilities offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural regions often are not able to offer strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which treatment services are an option for them through which facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
