Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Dayton, VA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dayton which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
