Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Dulles, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Dulles which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
